Blackwood Wendy, Hugo Veldsman Trio and The Fleas played to a fullhouse at Die Boer this past Saturday. Hugo and Adriaan are both ‘Durbies’, which is what people who attended Durbanville High School are called. The pre-eminent theatre/performance venue in the neighbourhood is Die Boer. Since schooldays they dreamt of performing on that stage.
Hugo’s first guitar teacher, Oom Boetie, was also in attendance. Rupert Mellor, a legendary muso, whom Gustav used to watch perform regularly, many decades before he eventually also started playing in bands, was also there.
We played a short set (Stick Around; Confessions; Fast Women, Slow Horses; Deep River Blues; All That Glitters) before the Hugo Veldsman Trio continued until the break. The Fleas closed out a great evening with a thoroughly bluesy set.
